It all starts with Listening. Fully focused Listening. Improv skills training is focused on partners completely and totally focused on one another. A good team member knows that they need to make their fellow team members look good. In Improvisational Theater my job is to serve the “scene” and my fellow improviser. If I am not 100% committed to making my partner look good and she is not 100% committed to making me look good our scene or sketch will crash and burn every time.
The same principal applies for teams in any organization.
Improv teaches us many things and chief among them is Listening, Fully Focused Listening! How often are we in a meeting or a conversation where when someone else is speaking we are already onto our next thought? Let’s be honest, in many situations teams are not really listening to what is being said in the moment. When that is the case some very important information will be missed. This can cause a downward spiral and what could be the beginning of a failed project.
When PFS is asked to conduct a workshop that is fully geared toward Teambuilding, we teach the skills necessary to allow teams to have productive outcomes during the actual team activities at the end of the workshop. We focus on Listening, Trust, Building on Ideas, Eliminating Conflict, Encouraging Communication, and Increasing Collaboration. Through our workshops teams cannot help but be “in the moment,” which creates more engaged team members.
